Montreal is an amazing city to live in. There are endless festivals, cultural events, sports events, parks and recreation, museums and galleries, as well as amazing shopping and restaurants. Montreal is a city with a high quality of life, and a low cost of living.
Montreal is divided into 27 boroughs, some of which are neighbourhoods of Montreal, and some which are their own city, with their own mayor.
Each borough of Montreal has it's own character and appeal for those who live there. Choosing where to look for an apartment in Montreal might be easy if you already live here, but if you are moving to Montreal from out of town it will be hard to know which borough would best fit your needs. The following are brief descriptions of some of the central Montreal boroughs where you might want to consider finding an apartment.
Downtown: Many of the apartments in downtown Montreal are in modern high-rise buildings. The central business district of Montreal is called "downtown" by those who live here, but is officially part of the borough of Ville Marie. It is bordered by the boroughs of Westmount to the West, and the Plateau Mont-Royal to the East. Three of Montreal's four universities - McGill, Concordia, and UQAM - are located in Ville-Marie, as well as The Grande Bibliothèque du Québec, which is a recent addition, and the CHUM mega-hospital, which is planned for the borough.
Plateau Mont-Royal: Most of the apartments in this trendy area are the quintessential Montreal apartment; two or three storey walk-ups with winding steps in front. This neighbourhood has been rated one of the best places to live in North America by many different organizations, including "The Project for Public Spaces".
It has also recently been found to be Canada's most creative neighbourhood. You would be hard pressed to find an apartment in Montreal in the Plateau that is not close to some fabulous restaurant, bar, café, or boutique.
Old Montreal: Apartments in Old Montreal range from all sizes of lofts to apartments in small historical buildings. Old Montreal is technically in the borough of Ville-Marie. Filled with history, some of the buildings in this area date back to the 1600s, and it is one of the oldest urban areas in North America. Today, Old Montreal is home to the port of Montreal, many boutique hotels, and a lot of young urban professional businesses such as advertising agencies and web design companies. It is also one of Montreal's main tourist areas attracting all types of people all year round.
Atwater: Apartments in the Atwater area of Montreal are close to both downtown, as well as the Atwater market, and the Lachine Canal. Technically this is in the borough of Sud-Ouest. The Lachine Canal is a popular recreational area for biking and rollerblading. This area was recently gentrified, and has many new condos, some that are warehouses converted into modern lofts. The Atwater market is one of the city's largest markets.
Côtes des Neiges - Notre-Dame de Grâces (NDG): Apartments in Montreal boroughs of NDG and Côtes des Neiges range from high-rises, to small buildings with character. Located North and West of Mont-Royal, residents of these adjoining neighbourhoods enjoy a central location, with many restaurants and cafes. The area includes Concordia University's Loyola campus, Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery, the Université de Montréal, and Saint Joseph's Oratory.
Westmount: Apartments in Westmount, which is just West of downtown Montreal, are often in beautiful older buildings. Traditionally, the community of Westmount was home to mostly wealthy Anglophones, however, it is now comprised of many middle and upper-middle class families of multiple ethnic and linguistic backgrounds.
